The National Voices members’ conference, No Decision About Me Without Me, will be held in central London on 16 September and will be followed by our annual general meeting.
This is a key opportunity to:
- provide a collective voice for National Voices members on the Health White Paper
- provide feedback to the government.
The Department of Health is attending on the day and we will produce a report highlighting issues discussed at the event.

GMC launches call for evidence
The General Medical Council has launched a call for written evidence to inform the scope and content on new child protection guidance for doctors. Information will be collected around four main themes:
- Consent and confidentiality when doctors work with children and their families
- Doctors’ relationships with parents, carers and the wider family
- Doctors working in partnership with other professionals and agencies
- The training and other support available for doctors.

Philips seeks ideas to improve health and well-being of people in cities
Philips is looking for simple solutions to improve the health and well-being of people living in cities. To help translate these ideas into reality, three award grants totalling €125,000 are available. The overall winning idea will receive €75,000, while the two additional ideas will each receive a grant of €25,000. Entries must be submitted on philips.com/because by 28 November 2010.
London and South East Burns Reviews - Patient Panel
The London and South East Burns Network (LSEBN) have recently begun a review of specialised burns services across London and the South East. They are seeking to engage with patients and patient representatives at a very early stage of the process and are seeking patients with some experience of burns services, or who would like to contribute to this review. Opportunity for Trustees and Chief Execs to Take Part in Board Effectiveness Survey
This confidential research study seeks to understand more about the performance of Boards of Trustees of UK charities and how Board effectiveness influences charity performance. This questionnaire seeks opinions from Trustees and Chief Executives for perspectives on their board and its impact on charity performance. Neither you or your charity will be identified in any publications resulting from this study. An electronic copy of the final report will be sent to all who request it and provide their email address.

Paul Burstow seeking views
The Department of Health has released a letter from Paul Burstow, the minister for care services, seeking views on the key priorities, supported by evidence of good practice, on what will have the greatest impact on improving carers’ lives in the next four years. Cavernoma Alliance UK speaking event

Men’s Health Forum conference
The Men’s Health Forum will shortly be advertising a national conference on men’s health to be held at the University of Warwick on 1 October 2010. Jointly organised by the Men’s Health Forums and Coventry City Council, this conference will feature debate led by leading experts in the field of men’s health. This will be an interactive conference and will seek not only to investigate why in the 21st century men are still dying prematurely from preventable diseases, but also to identify what can be done about it.
Epilepsy Action releases report on specialist nurses
Epilepsy Action has released a report, Best care: The value of epilepsy specialist nurses. This report is part of a new campaign to protect and promote epilepsy specialist nurses (ESNs). The full report can be read here. For more information about this campaign, see the Epilepsy Action webpage.
NNRU presents healthcare support workers research findings
The National Nursing Research Unit (NNRU) has released a report, Moving forward with healthcare support workforce regulation, in which it makes a cautious case for extending regulation to currently unregulated healthcare support workers. King’s Fund report on the role of GPs in maternity care
The King’s Fund have released a report on the role of GPs in maternity care. It asks whether there is still a role for GPs in maternity care; attempts to define a future role for GPs in pre-conception antenatal and postnatal care, and discusses the merits of shared care between GPs and midwives. Migraine Trust public information event

BSR and RCP conference on health work and wellbeing

The British Society for Rheumatology and the Royal College of Physicians are running a conference on health work and wellbeing. This conference will share the latest research on musculoskeletal conditions, and highlight emerging clinical practice to help patients stay in work. Epilepsy Action: Upfront about epilepsy – Young people’s drama workshop and family conference

This double event by Epilepsy Action is aimed at young people with epilepsy, their families and carers. A drama workshop is open to 30 young people with epilepsy aged between 13 and 17 years. The workshop is designed to empower young to share their experiences. The conference is aimed at young people and their families and carers, and runs alongside the workshop.
