Duty of Candour
Mon, 10 October 2011
See below National Voices' statement on Duty of Candour consultation as announced by Department of Health, 10 October, 2011.
Don Redding, Director of Policy at National Voices, says:
“National Voices believes that what is being proposed in the consultation is inadequate. It does not cover all providers of services – for example, GP practices and dental practices are not part of NHS standard contracts. And it does not propose anything really new, as the document itself recognises that a requirement for ‘openness’ is already in those contracts, and that ‘no new expectations on the NHS’ are being set.
“There should be a statutory duty of candour, located in the Care Quality Commission’s regulations, as the Health Select Committee recommended last July. That would back up the contractual duty, making openness a requirement for registration, and would apply to all providers, once GPs come within the scope of registration in 2013.”
