National Voices’ HSJ Takeover

In October 2022, National Voices ‘took over’ the Health Service Journal (HSJ) for a week, bringing new voices, experiences and opinions to its readers.

  • Health inequalities
  • Person-centred care
  • Lived experience

In March 2022, HSJ raised over £23,000 from an e-auction it ran to help people fleeing from the Ukrainian conflict. One of the prizes on offer was the opportunity to help edit HSJ for a week, and some very kind individuals crowdfunded to allow National Voices this opportunity.

HSJ is read by influential health and care decision makers at all levels, as well as people looking for reliable health news. The take-over, which took place on the week commencing 17 October 2022, gave us a fantastic opportunity to ensure this key audience could hear from people with lived experience and people working in and alongside voluntary and community sector organisations to provide crucial services.

New voices

As part of the ‘takeover’, National Voices commissioned work on topics such as the cost of living crisis and how this affects people with ill health, spotlights on innovative organisations making real change on health inequalities, and comment pieces covering a range of themes. The National Voices team also contributed to Daily Insights, which are sent out to HSJ’s mailing list and cover current events along with opinion and fact.

All content published as part of this ‘takeover’, including the Daily Insights, is free to access once you register for a free account with HSJ and has its own dedicated space on its website. National Voices staff members including then-Chief Executive Charlotte Augst, Sarah Sweeney, Rachel Matthews and Keymn Whervin each contributed a comment piece. News items were written featuring our members SignHealth, CAHN, and JustLife.

We would like to thank our members who were involved in this work.
